What now Google?

Reading the Google Help forums over the last few weeks has shown the depth of the impact that the Panda has had on many sites. And what the general consensus seems to be is that Google have simply got it all wrong with their last update.

Make no bones about this, this update will do Google more damage in the long-term than it will the internet users.

A number of years ago I came of the opinion that Google was a dangerous ally and this last update shows the depth of my concern and the ultimate reason behind my concerns.

One of the tips I try to give new site developers who try to monetise their sites is that they avoid Adsense.

The whole rot is when you come to rely on Google and that you hand the power of your site over to the ‘tin hats’.

However, in Google’s defence, they do face a continual uphill battle in combating the companies and sites out there that try to ‘game the system’.

My thoughts on this is that Google would be better off having human ‘bots’ to check on sites and to be responsive to site owners who complain about their site being scraped BUT whether Google will take note of the feedback will have to be seen.

Currently it looks more like that they will be needing to do ‘damage control’, as rest assured this will have more than ripple effects on the people out there.

Here’s hoping a suitable solution is found

Well here we are, finally the development and launch of BobdeBilder.net which will discuss the world of Internet Development.

After a number of years of being involved with web design and internet development as well as the need to make a living off what is done on the internet, I have been able to gain a fair amount of knowledge and experience regarding the web and its workings.

A number of persons who are in some way involved with web design or who are trying to make a living off the internet or have their business related to the www have mentioned on occasions that thye would be interested in reading and learning more via me discussing this experience.

Preparing the Category Display

Developing this blog/site is taking me a little longer due to me moving the goalposts again of recent. No sooner do I make progress with all the projects and before I can catch my breath I have added on to the workload.

2009 will be very different as Level/Phase 1 is certainly near completion however there will always be new sites and portals to be developed. I am hoping to get down to the income earning side and will be looking to increase the pennies in the bottle.

Currently 75% of my work is development and it doesn’t really fall into the income earning category and if I delve deeper 90% of my work is currently development and 10% is maintenance or juggling.

Now without further ado, let’s discuss the categories and their content.

Internet – as it says on the can however this will be internet development as well as the things that can make internet development easier.

Web-design – somewhere in here there used to be someone who started off as a web designer (well maybe) however this blog will definitely discuss web design

vBulletin – being somewhat of a forum specialist I have settled on vBulletin as a platform to develop most of the portals on, it makes a great backbone for user control

Drupal – this is definitely the future, it is already the present but nowhere near the extent of how this shall develop, I use vBdrupal to link Drupal to vBulletin.

WordPress – well this is a WordPress platform and I have decided to develop many sites in this platform due to its ease of use and simple lightness about it and did I mention that I am able to integrate WP with vBulletin.

Directory development – eSyndicat is what I settled on however Google have hit the sites hard regarding the nofollow rule however this product still has great value if used correctly, currently working on the integration process for vB

Pligg – I like this product however it has a fair way still to go in the handling of users and certain elements in Admin, sadly it is like a teenage prodigy with lots of potential and whether or not it can achieve is yet to be seen. For over 2 years there was a call for vB integration and it never happened. And then, I found Drigg which integrates with Drupal and thus I have got it to work with vB.

There will be more categroies and discussions to follow however I needed to set this marker

Web design in the beginning

Having completed a DTP course (good old Desk Top Publishing) which covered Quark Express, Photoshop and Illustrator; all this on a Mac, a friend asked me whether I would like to develop a website for him while learning to make web sites.

I purchased the book Frontpage 2000 in easy steps by Michael Price and set about developing my first website for said friend.

The site was an Accommodation portal and it made for an interesting start.

I moved from the country I was living in to a new non-English speaking country and I continued developing the site.

He had paid me in RAM for a computer, had bought a scanner for me which I still use till this day, as well as giving me a 2nd hand computer which maybe was better suited to a council dump. I am not sure whether I also got cash for the project.

I became so enthusiastic with the project that I began adding places to see and started working on maps for the site where accommodation was relevant to various places of interest and sight-seeing.

There was no charge for what I was doing as I was having fun experimenting and learning more however my enthusiasm for what I was doing was not matched by his show of appreciation, so I decided to develop a running information portal.

And this was how my biggest portal to date came into being.

The site is still has its original warts and all HTML which is in dire need for updating in 2009.
